When the Lights Go Out – Mary Kubica

When The Lights Go Out

Well, I hated this. Mary Kubica is usually an author I enjoy but this was just, not good. This one opens with us learning that Jesse’s mom Eden is dying of cancer. Quickly, Jesse learns that her social security is actually says she is dead. We then alternate between a suffering insomniac Jesse (follow a suffering insomniac Jesse as she tries to navigate her new world without her mom and questioning who she is) and her mom Eden. The Jesse chapters were so bleak, boring, and repetitive. I would get to the point of considering a DNF but then it would flip back to Eden and I would soldier on. I kept hoping the ending would really pull it all together and make me grateful I stuck to it.

Sadly, the ending was somehow worse than the beginning and middle of the book. And just when I thought the ending couldn’t get worse, it managed to get even worse. I rarely rate below 3 stars, but the ending made me take another star away at the end.

Rating: 2 out of 5.
