It Should Have Been You – Andrea Mara

It should have been you

This was an interesting book. The story starts with the main character, Susan, sending a message meant for her sisters to the neighborhood WhatsApp group. As someone who has done this more times than I care to admit, this was a unique hook I could get behind. Susan’s mistake is screenshotted and shared all over social media and quickly the consequences of this misstep are piling up.

The story then starts to get a little over the top pretty quickly. The next day the body of a woman is discovered. This woman’s address starts the same as Susan’s (a mistake that has sent their packages to each other’s houses over the years). Susan quickly fears that this death has to be tied to her WhatsApp mistake.

Despite my love of the initial concept, the number of weird overlapping threads and connections is too much. There are just too many story lines that have to be tied together that the plot ends up far past reasonable likelihood and coincidence to obviously forced for the story.

I never considered putting this book down. However, I did not finish with that “couldn’t put it down” feeling. I would definitely consider reading this author again. The idea was there. There were brief hints of an author capable of a 5 star thriller. This one just didn’t nail it.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
