This book starts by introducing us to Meg, an addict, who works catching bad guys for a casino. She learns of her famous sister’s death. She cannot wrap her brain around the idea of her sister, Haley, committing suicide and decides to check into the same high end rehab center where Haley’s life ended. Meg’s POV then focuses on her working through her own addiction issues while simultaneously trying to determine what really happened to Haley.
In the other POV, Cara is an administrative manager at the clinic. She is relatively new to the facility and through her interactions with her coworkers and the police, she quickly begins to suspect something is amiss. This is where the book fell more flat for me. I got some important information through this character and her POV, however, I did not care about her and her portion of the plot.
I really loved this book for the first 85-90% but the final twist is what brought it down from a 4.5 or so read down to a 3.5. The ending was quite silly and with everything else going on it was just too much. It went from being a crazy thriller that was “unbelievable” in the shocking sense to just being literally unbelievable.
That being said, I would still give this 3.5 stars. I would recommend you read it. I even immediately put my next Cate Quinn book on hold.
