I spent the first half or so of the book waiting for the moment that I wouldn’t want to put this book down. At first, I wanted to say Heather Gudenkauf did a great job of building suspense but after thinking on it for this review, I realize that isn’t right and that is why I never got to the “can’t put it down” stage of an excellent thriller. She did, however, keep me very curious as the multiple plot lines were developing in the first half of the book. The difference being, I felt more like an outside observer thinking about where she might be going with these different pieces. I didn’t get emotionally invested in any of the characters.
Then comes the ending. The ending felt incredibly rushed. Gudenkauf spent so much time building something that felt like it was over in the blink of an eye.. The motivations of characters are not exactly clear in the end. Overall, I just left the book feeling meh.
Simply 3 stars.
